How to get into winter dirt bike riding
So i had no idea how much fun winter dirt bike riding would be.
Once we had a couple days of perfect conditions you will be hocked!
This can be expensive with all the options for performance in winter riding. This will be a guide to ease you into it so you can see if its right for you. This is also for riding on trails not ICE. that’s something totally different.
Kold Kutter Screws
- Start with kold Kutter screws. This will not ruin the tires incase winter riding is not for you.
- You can order them on amazon for cheap money
- Many riders prefer this on the outside of the front tire so the tire does not pull out of ruts as easy.
Con:
These screws wear out fairly quickly 4- 5 solid rides and many screws will come out. so you will want to order extras as each ride you will have to replace missing screws.
Screw In tire studs
These are a bit more expensive and will ruin the tire for summer riding. this is a bit more of a commitment to winter riding.
con:
The auger style screws will typically move around and start slanting in one direction typically away from acceleration. this reduces the studs ability to grip like it did when it was first installed.
Professionally installed glued in studs or manufactured studded tires.

These tires are are $700 investment and will last 3-5 years. This is more for the very serious winter rider. Some riders will build the front tire with the auger style screws and kold kutter for the outside knobs to save money and to increase performance.
I lost 90% of the Kold Kutter’s off the rear in one ride. I did my best not to spin but when you lose a couple…the rest follow very quickly. They work great for the front but I should remove some of the outside screws. Very aggressive and the bike gets pulled around.
The crews give you a chance to see if you like winter riding.. If you end up liking it then move to the auger style screws. these stay in the tire much better.. Your looking at $125 per tire. the front should hold up for a couple years and the back tire should last the season .. Then if your really hooked then buy glued studded tire. this hold up better because the studs can move and wont cut into the rubber as much. they usually last multiple seasons.
